Dragon & Sea Turtle

Finally, a new illustration I can post. This was a special request of a dragon and a sea turtle, so I thought it would be fun to have the dragon riding the turtle on a wave. I originally had the entire thing colored, but after much decision-making, I realized I liked it better with everything colored but the actual animals, I think it makes them pop more with them being in black and white. Anyway, enjoy.

So here's something new I've been trying out lately. Layering some cool watercolor/acrylic washes and doing a pen and ink drawing on top of them. The texture on the washes is actually little bits of bath salt I put on the paper when the color was drying, and it came out pretty cool I thought. More to come soon on this front.

Gouache Resist Bunny

So this is a Gouache Resist I did a little while ago. Basically what that means is you paint the picture you want, then cover the entire piece in India Ink, and let it dry. You then run the entire thing under water, and the ink is repelled from the gouache paint. So anything not painted (meaning any paper showing) is going to turn black, and you get some cool dropout effects with the ink, as shown.

Also, I've been really into these carnivorous rabbits lately, I don't know why, but they're fun.

Ghost-Tiger Fish

I had this weird idea in class the other day when my students were taking a quiz about camouflage ghost animals. So I sort of just took this tiger fish and made its stripes camo-colored, and purposely disregarded the outline to give it a sort of ghostly look. I wanted the stripes to make up the outline of the fish, and it came out pretty sweet I thought.

"Ant farm"

This is a sculpture I made for a project called "The Altered Book," where we had to somehow use a book any way we wanted to tell a story. I decided to make it into an ant farm by using a bandsaw to cut up a landscaping book and glue it together to look like the dirt portion of the ant farm. I then used a router to cut out the pathways and added some real grass and dirt etc. The entire thing was made from scratch, from the wooden frame to the arrangement of glass. This piece ended up being the showcase to the Graduate Show at Adelphi University.

The first illustration in a miniseries I'm doing of fairy tales. This one is from the story "The Sea-Hare," where a man has to hid himself from a princess who can see everywhere in the world. This picture shows him about to be swallowed by a fish in a lake, so he can hide in his stomach.

This is a cover illustration I did in case anyone ever went completely crazy and decided to publish a book of my work. It's based off of the "Hare..." story I illustrated, and I kind of just wanted a simple but kind of graphic image on the front. Thus, I went with the rabbit out in the snowy hills with scarce evergreens around him.

The Hare Who Would Not Be King

These illustrations are part of a 3 piece series for the short story, "The Hare Who Would Not Be King."

The first illustration pictures a Lion who gets crowned king of the animal kingdom, but the Hare forsees nothing good to come of this, and refuses to take part in the celebration.

The second illustration shows the King commanding the Hare's best friend, the Elephant, to capture him and feed him to the Lion for dinner.

The third Illustration depicts the Hare tricking the Lion into thinking his reflection is another king who wants to overthrow him, thus leading to his drowning.
